Now is an exciting time to join the Development Team at Spaulding Rehabilitation—which is home to Harvard Medical School’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, has been ranked a “Top Three” Rehabilitation Hospital by U.S. News & World Report for seven years running, and is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families coping with the ongoing challenges of injury, illness, and disability. Following the successful conclusion of the Campaign for Spaulding Research Institute in 2022, which raised more than $94 million, the Development Team has been ramping up its activities to further bolster the network’s research and clinical missions through endowment and other philanthropic gifts, all to sustain Spaulding’s excellence for generations to come.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Principal, Major, and Planned Giving (SD), the Major and Planned Giving Officer (MPGO) will play a vital role in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major and planned gift donors for the Spaulding Rehabilitation network. To that end, the MPGO will develop strategies and solicitation plans for defined prospects who are able to make outright and/or planned gifts at the five-, six-, and seven-figure levels. The MPGO also will help to plan and then ultimately execute strategic efforts to promote planned giving options and our planned giving recognition society (the Francis “Hooks” Burr Society) among Spaulding’s various constituents. Finally, the MPGO will oversee the management of Spaulding’s comprehensive grateful patient fundraising program, with a special focus on our four inpatient hospitals and select outpatient sites.
Job Summary
Major Gifts Portfolio Work:
• Carry a defined, targeted portfolio of prospects capable of making a major ($20,000+) or planned/deferred gift commitment to Spaulding.
• Develop strategies and plans for prospects and donors within an effective “moves management” structure, forming relationships with these key constituencies to reach our goal of raising significant dollars and resources for Spaulding.
• Meet defined prospect and donor interaction metrics that will be determined in conjunction with the Senior Director of Principal, Major, and Planned Giving (SDPMPG). Such metrics include, but are not limited to, number of prospect visits and number of gift solicitations.
• Work closely to develop prospect and donor fundraising strategies in collaboration with the SDPMPG along with Spaulding leadership, members of the Board of Trustees, physicians, and other key stakeholders.
• Ensure that all donor interactions, forecasts, and strategies are recorded in the Atlas (CRM) database as outlined by the Development Systems team.
Planned Giving Work:
• In conjunction with the SDPMPG, serve as a planned giving resource for members of the Development team, and partner with other gift officers when appropriate on planned and/or “blended” gift strategies for prospects and donors.
• In conjunction with the SDPMPG, develop a strategic plan for marketing planned gift and bequest options to targeted prospects and donors. Work closely with the Development Communications team to produce and distribute these materials, track responses, and determine appropriate follow-up steps.
• Periodically review Spaulding’s relevant planned giving web pages and recommend edits and enhancements to the Development Communications team as needed.
• Recommend and help execute one or more annual stewardship touchpoints with members of the Hooks Burr Society.
• Stay abreast of relevant tax law changes and current planned gift strategies and assist in presenting this information to colleagues and other stakeholders.
Grateful Patient Program Management:
• Work with Development colleagues and Spaulding leadership to oversee the ongoing management of the grateful patient fundraising program, with particular focus on partnering with key clinicians to identify and cultivate grateful patients (both outpatient and inpatient) to build our prospective donor pool.
• In collaboration with the Associate Director of Prospect Development and Stewardship (ADPDS), ensure timely wealth screening of outpatients, identification of wealthy and high-philanthropic-potential prospects, and distribution of regular outpatient reports to develop and maintain a steady pipeline of new grateful patient prospects for the entire Major Gifts team.
• In collaboration with the ADPDS, monitor and measure key performance indicators, including, but not limited to, grateful patient referrals, visits by gift officers, qualified prospects, and the number and value of proposals and closed gifts.
• Serve as Development staff liaison to one or more select outpatient sites for purposes of grateful patient strategy and coordination. Oversee scheduling of monthly meetings with clinical staff and prepare meeting materials for discussion.
• Prepare and deliver presentations and reports to a variety of audiences to increase awareness of the grateful patient fundraising program.
• Coordinate the training and educational initiatives of the grateful patient fundraising program across the Spaulding network.
• Collaborate with the Development Communications team to develop materials for marketing and increasing the visibility of the grateful patient fundraising program
